While you can completely unlock your shiny Verizon iPhone yourself using the combination of RedSn0w, Ultrasn0w and PwnageTool, they all might be tricky for some of you. Thank god there are now services that offer unlocking your iPhones remotely without jailbreaking:
“A number of websites have begun offering customers the ability to have their iPhones unlocked remotely for use on any network without requiring that the devices be jailbroken. As noted by prominent iPhone hacker MuscleNerd, the procedure seems to involve accessing Apple’s database to directly add IMEI device identifiers for unlocking.”
Cut Your Sim is one of the first ones to offer it. The site claims that it can unlock your phone permanently for $169.99. As Macrumors, points out, Apple can easily refresh the database to lock your phone’s again.
Please note that while these sites claim this unlock will be permanent, Apple can easily whip their magic wands and that will be $170 and an unlock both down the drain. I still think it’s safer to unlock at your own.
But you want to know what’s even safer? Jailbreaking and not even bothering with unlocking your iPhone. Unless you necessarily have to, I urge you not to do it. Besides, do you really think Apple will let these sites continue to operate? I give them a week tops.
